Hope and Healing

China Update

Spread the love

On my drive into work this morning I was listening to reports from the Earthquake in Yushu County in China on the BBC.

My wife and I spent two years in China in the 1980’s. I was back last year for a visit. China is close to our hearts. The stories on the radio reminded me so much of what I heard last month when I was in Haiti. Earthquakes are terrible things.

I don’t quite know how to respond. On an institutional level cbm does not have any programs and partners in the earthquake zone. That makes it easy for us to make a pronouncement that we are “not involved”. Having just visited Haiti, I know only too well that if we are “involved” or not, people are suffering. Whether we have partners there or not – people are trapped, dying, and newly disabled. I cannot simply pronounce that we are not involved because on a human level – on a Christian level – we have to be involved. In the future we may have the “institutional involvement”.

There is one way I and all of us can be involved right now – we can pray. I ask that you join me in praying for families who are now in the cold, who have lost loved ones, who may have to deal with injuries and disabilities, and who don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

Meanwhile in the days, weeks, and months to come cbm will be talking with longstanding partners and regional advisors to see how best we can be of assistance to these communities.
